Id is basically a non-strict functional programming language, but it has a computation rule different from the traditional lazy evaluation rule, leading to enormous amounts of parallelism. The G-machine part of the name comes from the fact that it is based on the G-machine (`graph machine'), an abstract machine for the sequential implementation of lazy functional languages.
