Well versed in both the magics and the sciences of the times he was made responsible for many of Pharao's projects. Little is known of Kherex' life and works except fragments of inscriptions and later legends. These merely add riddles. The legends tell of a man who falls to unholy experiments and, caught by the seductive lure of immortality, is finally trapped in a hell of his own making. The legends also tell of many strange and terrible experiences down through the centuries, most occuring in and around the great pyramids of Gize. Many explorers have set out to trace the name of Kherex and find his tomb, his treasures, and possibly his secrets. Most have never returned. A few were found insane in the desert, and babbled and raved unheard of details of the ancient Egyptian gods until their deaths. One poor man in the late 1880's did live for seven years after his ordeal, but his only words were "flip-flap, flip-flap". GENERAL DESCRIPTION: "Gize" is (alternative spellings exist) the name of a plateau near Cairo in Egypt where the three major pyramids stand in a complex of smaller tombs and temple ruins. GIZE as a text and graphics adventure game is itself a map of this area, location for location. It includes the three major pyramids, six temples, the Sphinx, and a number of tombs. Initially over 100 locations are easily found in the course of exploring the plateau, more or less as if actually walking about. To find and explore the many additional hidden locations takes much more effort however. It is easy to get quite lost, but with few exceptions the mapping is locally accurate and corresponds to the real plateau. A careful study of the clues in the illustrations will however show the way, as each and every of the many locations has a unique illustration or view! Don't worry if the first bit of exploring feels a bit "empty", with not much happening. This is intentional and is to reflect the atmosphere of the ruins. At first the explorer is meant to explore and will come in due course to appreciate the slow and deliberate heightening of tension when it does come. The vocabulary is varied but specific. Hints may be given to use specific words, or to phrase the command in a certain way so as to avoid using another word. Remember that only one or two words of your sentence may be taken out as the actual command. Directions are the abbreviated N S E W NE NW SE SW U D GO = ENTER OUT = EXIT Other useful commands are: SAVE LOAD (a game position) HELP QUIT SCORE TURNS L = LOOK = R = REDESCRIBE WAIT REST EXAMINE SEARCH I = INVENTORY = CARRIED TAKE (not "get"!) DROP WEAR REMOVE EAT DRINK USE ... and whatever else you try! SOLUTION GUIDE: First become familiar with the layout of the locations of the plateau and surrounding desert. Remember to eat and drink as prompted (but don't feed the animals!). Give a thought about where to find more food and water in due time. Speaking of which, time does pass and it is expected to sleep during the nights. Scoring reflects real progress in solving GIZE. Exploring as such gives little gain except in terms of new locations, objects and clues. 100% is reached after completing the main tasks and reaching the final location with no serious errors of judgement. Hints and clues are found in both text and pictures. Note all messages, texts, inscriptions. (Can you read glyphs?). The usual helpful objects are scattered about (by previous explorers?) so keep looking. Objects found may not always seem useful, but most are there for a reason. There may be a curse involved which manifests on incorrect use, or keeps you from discovering exactly what has been found. Clues do exist somewhere, even if not always very obvious ones. (But don't get paranoid about it, if it's important enough, the clue will be quite specific.) Examining items several times in varying circumstances can give additional information, as things are not always as they appear at first glance. Note that there is much more text in GIZE than is visible at first glance, but like ancient inscriptions on temples and tombs this takes effort to see. If planned correctly, it will be found possible to have all necessary tools and objects (although not always the same ones!) carried throughout. This has been thought out in order to avoid unnecessary running back and forth between locations simply to move objects. The next stage of the solution is to find the hidden locations. This means having and using the proper kind of "key" to be able to enter the new locations at the proper point. There is a way to determine which objects are "keys", apart from other clues. The third and final stage is to successfully complete the task connected with Kherex. How to prepare for this is difficult to uncover, but if done, the actual completion is simple enough. Once this task is accomplished then the second task is to use (find) the exit location to attain 100% score. LOAD "GIZE" (c) 1986 LEUF pi n"" 6
